Benton Harbor Schools has confirmed that an assistant basketball coach was involved in the post-game assaults that took place during last Wednesday’s game against Buchanan.
According to a statement from the Superintendent, the coach in question is no longer associated with or employed by the District in any capacity.
Regarding the student involved, the superintendent says they are bound regulations and cannot provide specific details. He says they are also working with the Michigan High School Athletic Association Executive staff and the other schools involved to make sure there isn’t a recurrence of violence.
Dowagiac Police have also been investigating the matter and asking for the public’s help finding some spectators that may be connected, somehow, to the incident.
Full statement from Benton Harbor Area Schools
To our school community,
Benton Harbor Area Schools unequivocally condemns and will not tolerate any acts of violence. While we understand that competitive events can generate intense emotions for both adults and students, the incidents that occurred following last week’s District basketball game are unacceptable and deeply concerning.
Regarding the student involved, we are bound by Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) regulations and therefore cannot provide specific details. However, we assure you that the District is actively reviewing this matter in full compliance with Board policies, procedures, and the Student Code of Conduct.
We have maintained close communication with the other schools involved and have also engaged in productive discussions with Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Executive staff. Our focus is not only to address the events of February 26th but, more importantly, to implement comprehensive measures that prevent any recurrence of such incidents.
Our dialogue with the MHSAA will continue as we collaboratively work to foster a safe and respectful environment for all participants.
Benton Harbor Area Schools District and the MHSAA are working together to resolve community and staff concerns, with a focus on accountability for all parties.
Benton Harbor Area Schools remains committed to upholding the highest standards of professional ethics and conduct. As previously stated, we are taking decisive actions based on verified information, in strict adherence to established Board policies for both staff and students. We are dedicated to moving forward in a positive and constructive manner.
Sincerely,
Dr. Kelvin Butts
Superintendent
