Three men were arrested early Sunday morning following a burglary at a local distribution center and a police pursuit that ended in a crash, leading to the recovery of more than $60,000 worth of stolen tools.

According to the South Bend Police Department, officers responded to a business alarm at the Hilti Distribution Center in the 3500 block of Olive Road around 5:45 a.m. Upon arrival, an officer spotted a U-Haul truck leaving the scene and began following the vehicle.

As the truck drove erratically, the officer attempted a traffic stop, prompting a pursuit along U.S. 20. The chase ended when the U-Haul crashed near Rosewood Road in St. Joseph County.

Following the crash, three male suspects fled into a wooded area. With assistance from the St. Joseph County and New Carlisle Police Departments, officers apprehended all three men—identified as 26-year-old Marquell Strickland, 22-year-old Darvel Grady, and 22-year-old Areon Halloway.

Authorities discovered a large number of tools in the back of the U-Haul, which Hilti employees later confirmed were valued at just over $61,000.

The suspects were transported to the St. Joseph County Jail on multiple preliminary charges and are awaiting formal charges from the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office.

The South Bend Police Department’s Property Crimes Unit is continuing its investigation.
