Gas prices in Indiana have shot up over the past few days and if you’re wondering why you’re paying more, the answer has to do with something that happens every year and every few weeks.

“Last time prices cycled it was to $3.09. This time prices cycled to $3.29, essentially a 20 cent premium because of the change over to summer gasoline,” said Patrick DeHaan, head of Petroleum Analysis at Gasbuddy.

The summer blend is more expensive.

“Moving forward, we probably will see prices cycle back to $3.29 once they fall closer to $3.”

Price cycling happens every two to three weeks in the Midwest and is a way for stations in competition with one another to reset.

“If you’re looking at your tank and it’s low I wouldn’t be in any hurry. Prices will start to trend lower in the next week or so.”

DeHaan said prices will then go up again.

He said Tariffs will likely affect gas prices. But, it’s not yet clear how or how much.
