Shots fired during large party at Grape Road rental property

The St. Joseph County Police Department is issuing a warning and asking for the public’s help following a shots fired incident this past weekend. It happened around 1 o’clock, Saturday morning, at a rental property in the 52000 block of Grape Road. A Ring Camera captured images of the shooting.

Upon arrival, officers encountered a large crowd, with many juveniles fleeing the scene while others remained. It’s estimated that approximately 50 individuals were present at the gathering. Thankfully, no one was shot.

Through the investigation, police believe there were at least two shooters, you can see that in the videos attached. One video clearly captures at least one of them. Investigators are seeking the public’s help in identifying this individual and obtaining any information related to that night’s incident.

The incident occurred at a rental property — a growing trend where homes are booked for a single night and used to host large gatherings. Unfortunately, some of these events have led to criminal activity, as seen in this case.

Police are urging rental property owners in St. Joseph County to take the following precautions:

  • Install exterior security cameras to monitor activity
  • Vet renters thoroughly before confirming bookings
  • Be cautious of one-night rentals
  • Notify nearby neighbors so they can help watch the property
  • Report any suspicious large gatherings to law enforcement
