ORIGINAL STORY:  A crash just east of Wakarusa left one woman dead and three others injured, including two with life-threatening injuries.

The collision occurred around 5:30 p.m. on Friday, March 21, about three miles east of Wakarusa, at the intersection of County Road 9 and County Road 36. According to the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office, a Honda Pilot traveling northbound on County Road 9 failed to stop at the intersection and struck a Chrysler Town and Country minivan heading westbound on County Road 36.

The impact caused the Chrysler to be pushed into a field on the northwest corner of the intersection, where it rolled and came to rest on its roof.

The driver of the Honda, a 40-year-old Goshen man, sustained a fractured sternum and was transported to Elkhart General Hospital. He was wearing a seatbelt, and his injuries were reported as non-life-threatening. No passengers were in his vehicle.

The Chrysler minivan was driven by a 41-year-old Wakarusa man. He suffered a head laceration and a brain bleed and was also taken to Elkhart General Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Two passengers in the minivan, a 38-year-old woman and 65-year-old Ronda Porter, both of Wakarusa, were also injured. The younger woman sustained a head injury and was transported to Memorial Hospital, where her injuries were listed as life-threatening.

Ronda Porter was airlifted to Memorial Hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.

All occupants of the Chrysler were wearing seatbelts.

The crash is under investigation by the Elkhart County Crash Investigation Team.
