In the past decade, 269 people have died in crashes in highway worksites or worksite backups in Indiana, prompting INDOT to enforce penalties for speeding in construction zones.
The new enforcement will start on May 5 in Indianapolis.
Drivers caught speeding 11 mph or more over the posted speed limit in specified work zones will receive violation notices, with penalties escalating for repeat offenders.
The Safe Zones program aims to improve safety for construction crews and drivers by monitoring speeds using truck-mounted devices and issuing tickets to violators.
Additional Safe Zones sites will be announced in the future.
