Elkhart Police // Alyssa Foster

Charges have been filed against Nicholas Phillip Stanley, 35, of Elkhart in connection with a murder at the Daylite Inn.

At 12:55 a.m. on Tuesday, June 24, Elkhart police responded to reports of a shooting. They found Allen Cogswell, 35, dead in his room from gunshot wounds to the head and chest.

A witness told police Stanley was seen with a long gun, looking through the window and knocking on Cogswell’s door. When Cogswell opened it, Stanley began shooting. The suspect then fled the scene, heading toward Menards.

Surveillance footage showed a man matching Stanley’s description near the Daylite Inn before the shooting and leaving in a maroon SUV.

Police learned Stanley had ties to Cogswell, a recently released sex offender. Stanley was charged with murder and is being held without bond at the Elkhart County Jail. A hearing is scheduled for July 3.

Why aren’t the “ties” between the shooter and the deceased disclosed? This pedophile got what he deserved, and all charges should be dropped as a thank you from the community for doing us all a favor.
