A traffic stop along I-94 led to a major drug arrest after a Michigan City man allegedly fled from police and was found with two bags of suspected cocaine.
According to the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy was monitoring eastbound traffic near the 29-mile marker when he observed a red passenger vehicle following a commercial motor vehicle too closely. The deputy followed the vehicle through a construction zone between the 33 and 34-mile markers, where the unsafe driving continued.
A traffic stop was initiated on U.S. 421 near County Road 400 North. The driver was identified as Donyell Mayhew, 45, of Michigan City.
A Michigan City Police officer responded to assist, and a K-9 unit alerted to the presence of narcotics. As deputies began to search the vehicle, Mayhew fled on foot but was apprehended nearby.
The search resumed, and officers reportedly discovered two bags containing a white compressed substance believed to be cocaine.
Mayhew was arrested on a Level 2 felony charge of Dealing in Cocaine. He is being held without bond at the LaPorte County Jail. Officials noted he was already out on bond at the time of this arrest.
