Michigan City leaders are once again considering plans for a new data center – this time with a different developer and a new location.
Just a week after the mayor pulled out of a previous proposal, the city council heard a new pitch from Phoenix Investors, a real estate group aiming to redevelop the old Federal Mogul building on the city’s east side.
The site is already zoned for industrial use, which includes data centers. Phoenix says the project could bring $26 million in investment to the area.
Residents shared a mix of support and concern during Thursday night’s council meeting. Some raised questions about environmental impact and nearby homes. Others said the project could boost jobs, tax revenue, and union labor opportunities.

After the initial construction, none of those jobs (barring the most menial) will go to local residents. The good jobs will go to H1B workers, not to Hoosiers.
