As summer brings a surge of new teen drivers to the road, a new WalletHub report highlights the safest-and most expensive-states for teenagers to drive and the State of Indiana ranks 7th safest on the lsit.

According to the personal-finance website, an average of eight teens die every day in the U.S. from motor vehicle accidents, underscoring the importance of safe driving practices.

WalletHub analyzed all 50 states using 23 key metrics, including teen driver fatalities, DUI rates, repair costs, and the presence of distracted-driving and impaired-driving laws.

Indiana ranked 7th overall, placing it above average in teen driving safety. Highlights for the Hoosier State include:

1st in both graduated licensing program laws and quality of roads

1st for distracted-driving and texting-while-driving laws

7th for average car repair costs and occupant-protection laws

26th for teen driver fatalities per 100,000 teens

23rd for premium increases when adding a teen driver to a parent’s policy and the presence of impaired-driving laws

While Indiana performs well in several safety categories, experts note there are areas for improvement, particularly regarding insurance costs for teen drivers and stricter enforcement of impaired-driving laws.
