A South Bend man is facing multiple felony charges after police say he confined a woman inside a hotel room and forced her into prostitution.
On Monday, September 1, St. Joseph County Police responded to a report of a disturbance at the Baymont Hotel in Roseland. Dispatchers advised that a woman in the lobby was crying and told staff a man would not allow her to leave. Moments later, the woman returned to a hotel room with the man.
When officers arrived, they located 31-year-old Kevin Brazier and a female companion. Police said the woman initially told officers she was fine, but after being separated from Brazier, she revealed a different account.
According to investigators, the victim said she met Brazier on Facebook about a month ago and traveled from out of town to South Bend a week earlier under the belief the two would “make money together.” Once in South Bend, Brazier allegedly posted an online advertisement for prostitution, confiscated her phone, and restricted her movements in the hotel.
Officers detained Brazier and later obtained a search warrant for the hotel room, where they reported finding a firearm and suspected marijuana.
Brazier was booked into the St. Joseph County Jail and is charged with criminal confinement, unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, and promoting prostitution.
Police said the case has been referred to the St. Joseph County Special Victims Unit and is also under review by federal investigators.
