A traffic stop initiated by Plymouth Police on Sunday night escalated into a multi-county pursuit that ended with the driver’s death.
According to St. Joseph County Police, Marshall County officers joined the chase as it entered St. Joseph County, where it came to an end on Kern Road between Bremen Highway and Ironwood Road.
The individual involved in the pursuit died at the scene. Officials have not yet released the person’s identity.
Although the St. Joseph County Police Department was not directly involved in the chase, it has been called in as the outside investigative agency.
Authorities confirmed they are aware of social media speculation suggesting the death may have been the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Investigators say those reports have not been confirmed and an autopsy will determine the official cause of death.
The investigation remains active, with detectives still processing the scene as of Monday morning.
