Formal charges have been filed against a man accused of causing a crash that injured an off-duty police lieutenant following Saturday night’s Notre Dame football game.

According to investigators, Joseph Johnston, 31, faces charges of Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated – Endangering a Person and Leaving the Scene of an Accident – Bodily Injury.

Police say the police lieutenant had just completed traffic duty for the game and was driving south on Ironwood Road when a northbound vehicle turned onto Dunn Road, pulling into his path and causing a collision.

Johnston allegedly fled the scene after the crash. Authorities later found him hiding in a wooded area near his home.

The lieutenant was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and has since been released to recover at home.
