A gravel truck driver was killed after the vehicle struck a median wall and caught fire along Interstate 80/94 near the 13-mile marker.
Indiana State Police say troopers were called to the scene around 4 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 13, and found the eastbound truck had crashed into the median, causing the trailer to overturn and spill gravel across all westbound lanes.
Investigators say the truck, for reasons still unknown, veered left into the median wall and an overhead signpost. The impact caused the cab to burst into flames, trapping the driver inside as the trailer went over the wall and into westbound traffic lanes.
The Lake Station Fire Department extinguished the blaze and discovered the driver deceased inside the cab. The Lake County Coroner’s Office will release the driver’s identity once positive identification is made and family has been notified.
The Indiana Department of Emergency Management also responded due to oil from the truck draining into the interstate’s sewer system and igniting during the fire.
