A proposed data center near New Carlisle hit a setback, Tuesday, as the St. Joseph County Committee voted to give the project an unfavorable recommendation to the full council.

The vote followed a push from the petitioner for a favorable recommendation and drew a large crowd of opponents, some carrying anti-data center signs.

Public comment wasn’t allowed at the committee meeting, but residents will have a chance to speak at the next council session.

The unfavorable vote was not unanimous-two council members opposed the unfavorable recommendation.

Their decision drew criticism from some who said the two Democrats were ignoring their constituents. The full St. Joseph County Council is expected to vote on the rezoning request in two weeks.
