New data from AARP finds that nearly one in four adults in Indiana are providing unpaid support to aging or ill loved ones.

That’s about 1.2 million people. The report, Caregiving in the U.S. 2025: Caring Across States, shows Hoosier caregivers deliver $10.8 billion worth of unpaid care each year, often while juggling jobs and facing financial strain.

AARP Indiana Director Sarah Waddle says many caregivers “carry this responsibility alone, jeopardizing their health, finances, and careers.”

Eighty percent spend their own money, averaging $7,200 annually. This National Family Caregivers Month, AARP urges lawmakers to back policies that ease the burden on caregivers.
