Leaf pickup programs suspended due to snowfall

St. Joseph County and The City of South Bend have suspended their leaf pickup programs until further notice after this weekend’s snowfall created conditions that make collection impossible. Officials say temperatures must stay consistently above freezing for crews to resume work, as snow-covered leaves and frozen conditions cause vacuum trucks to clog.

In South Bend, city crews have been working 12-hour shifts through the holiday weekend to keep roads passable. Residential streets are expected to be cleared by the end of the day, and crews will continue treating main roads as additional snowfall moves into the area tonight.
