An Elkhart man charged with murder in the death of a 20-month-old boy will head to trial after being ruled competent by two court-appointed doctors.

21-year-old Miguel Freid Garcia is accused in the fatal injuries of the child, who was brought to Elkhart General Hospital on December 16 with a skull fracture and severe brain trauma.

The Goshen News says Garcia and the child’s mother initially claimed the injuries came from a fall days earlier, but doctors said the damage was not consistent with that explanation. Detectives say phone videos show the child deteriorating while in Garcia’s care.

The child died on December 20, and the death was ruled a homicide.
