Formal charges have been filed in connection with a shooting that injured an 18-year-old man at an Elkhart apartment complex.

The Elkhart Police Department announced the Elkhart County Prosecutor’s Office has charged 17-year-old Davonte Jones with attempted murder, a Level 1 felony, in adult court.

The shooting occurred around 10:15 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 22, in the 700 block of Monroe Street at the River Run Apartments. Officers responding to a 911 call found a 17-year-old male inside the apartment building at 737 Monroe St. suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. He was treated at the scene and transported to a local hospital.

Police later learned an 18-year-old male had also arrived at the hospital with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. Investigators determined those injuries were connected to the Monroe Street shooting.

After being treated and medically cleared, Jones was arrested and initially taken to the Elkhart Juvenile Detention Center. The attempted murder charge has since been filed in the Elkhart Circuit Court, where the case will proceed in adult court.
