ISP investigating after Sheriff’s Office pursuit ends in crash

The Indiana State Police are investigating after a police pursuit ended in a crash in Elkhart Tuesday afternoon. 

According to preliminary information, an Elkhart County Sheriff’s deputy, working an off-duty security detail in uniform at a department store near Cassopolis Street and Emerson Drive, attempted to stop a suspected shoplifter around 12:13 p.m.

The suspect fled in a Buick SUV, later disregarding a stop sign and leading the deputy on a brief pursuit.

Around 12:15 p.m., the fleeing vehicle struck a vehicle at the intersection of Bristol and Cassopolis Streets. Both drivers were hospitalized.
