Michigan, Sample intersection in downtown South Bend closed after stolen car pursuit, crash

South Bend police closed the intersection of Sample and Michigan Streets after a stolen vehicle being pursued by officers collided with another vehicle, injuring three people.

According to the South Bend Police Department, the incident began around 3:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 21, when officers attempted to stop a stolen vehicle near South and Fellows Street. The driver refused to pull over, prompting a pursuit.

The suspect vehicle later struck another vehicle in the area of Sample and Michigan Streets. Three individuals were transported to the hospital with injuries stemming from the crash. Their conditions were not immediately released.

The St. Joseph County Fatal Alcohol Crash Team has assumed responsibility for the investigation and will release additional information as it becomes available.

Police said the intersection of Sample and Main Streets is expected to remain closed through the morning commute.
