Michigan Senate Republican Leader Aric Nesbitt is calling for federal oversight of the state’s 2026 elections.

Nesbitt says he agrees with President Donald Trump that federal monitoring is needed to ensure elections are conducted fairly and legally.

He argues voters cannot trust Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, accusing her of resisting transparency and accountability.

WSJM says Nesbitt and 21 other Republican lawmakers sent a letter in November to the U.S. Attorney General requesting Department of Justice oversight of the 2026 primary and general elections.

They cited what they call a conflict of interest because Benson, the state’s chief elections official, is also running for governor. Benson says Michigan’s elections are secure and the claims are not rooted in fact.
