West Side Middle School teacher arrested on child sex-related crimes

A West Side Middle School teacher has been arrested on multiple charges related to child seduction. Donald Shafer faces preliminary charges including Child Seduction, Sexual Misconduct with a Minor, Child Solicitation, and Child Exploitation. Goshen Police say an officer spotted a car in Shanklin Park around 3 a.m. Wednesday and found Shafer inside with a teenage boy. Shafer was arrested and taken to the Elkhart County Jail. Elkhart Schools placed Shafer on paid administrative leave and is cooperating with the investigation. The district said it is prioritizing student safety and security.

Goshen Police Department – Press Release:

On Feb. 11,, at 3:06 a.m., Goshen Police Department officers were conducting routine patrol in Shanklin Park after park hours when they located a vehicle in the park. Officers made contact with the two occupants and identified a 54-year-old male and a teenage boy.

During the course of the investigation, officers determined there was probable cause to arrest Donald C. Shafer, of 53601 Hyde Park Drive, Bristol, on the preliminary charges of Child Seduction, Sexual Misconduct with a Minor, Child Solicitation, and Child Exploitation. Mr. Shafer was transported to and incarcerated at the Elkhart County Jail.

This remains an active and ongoing investigation. No additional information is available at this time.
