Indiana’s Bureau of Motor Vehicles is rolling out a new license plate for amateur radio operators starting February 13.

The plate will be available to Indiana residents with a current FCC amateur radio license. It will feature the operator’s unique callsign and can be used on passenger vehicles and light trucks.

State officials say the plate recognizes the important role amateur radio operators play in public service and emergency communications.

Volunteers often work with public safety agencies and the National Weather Service to provide backup communication during severe weather and disasters.

Drivers must visit a BMV branch and show proof of their FCC license to apply for the new plate.
