Emergency crews were called to the St. Joseph River near the Six-Span Bridge on County Road 17 in Elkhart County around 3:50 p.m. Sunday for a possible drowning.
When medics got there, they found a person in the water under one of the bridge spans.
The person was awake and breathing.
Firefighters sent swimmers into the river.
A nearby resident allowed them to use a canoe to reach the person.
The person was placed in the canoe and brought back to shore.
Officers with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and Elkhart’s water rescue team checked the river with boats and drones and did not find anyone else.
