As part of Black History Month, the City of South Bend is honoring local African American leaders with a new series of community billboards.

Mayor James Mueller says the recognition highlights the achievements and contributions of Black leaders across the city.

This year also introduces two new honors: the Arts Award and the Jaraan Cornell Sportsman Award. Honorees include Cheryl Hayes, George Jones, Tina Patton, Ja’Van Smith, Tarrah “Micki” Miller, Maurice Scott Jr., Pastor John Ward, Markus Burton and special guest Jaylon Smith.

Billboards will run February 23 through March 1, with a free public awards ceremony February 26 at the Century Center.
