An Elkhart woman who pleaded guilty to murder in the death of her six-year-old stepson has been sentenced.
27-year-old Cheyenne Elmore received a 65-year prison sentence, with five years suspended to probation.
Six-year-old Justin died Aug. 3. Authorities say he suffered a traumatic brain injury and a punctured lung after severe abuse.
Investigators say the boy’s father, Franklin Elmore, beat him and forced him to run while carrying weights.
Prosecutor Vicki Becker says Cheyenne Elmore admitted responsibility but also lied to medics and investigators and deleted evidence.
The judge called the case one of the most horrific he has seen in more than 45 years on the bench.
