New details have been released in connection to a non-fatal shooting reported in Elkhart.
According to the Elkhart Police Department, officers were called around 9 p.m. on Sunday, April 12, to the 600 block of East Windsor Avenue, near County Road 9, after a 911 report of a shooting with injuries. First responders arrived and located a male victim suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Investigators now say the shooting happened at a nearby home in the 800 block of East Windsor Avenue. A 16-year-old boy was handling a handgun when it accidentally discharged, striking a 19-year-old male family member in the back of the head.
Police say the victim’s injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening.
A juvenile was initially detained at the scene but was later released to a parent or guardian. The case is being forwarded to the Elkhart County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
