Michigan City man faces charges after injury crash

A Michigan City man is facing multiple charges months after a crash that left a pedestrian seriously injured.
The incident occurred around 12:45 a.m. on September 20, 2025, at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Fairfield Avenue. When officers arrived, they found a 26-year-old man suffering from life-threatening injuries. He was transported to a hospital for treatment.
Police later identified 31-year-old Gerral Smith as a suspect. He remained at large until his arrest on April 13 in the 200 block of Hopkins Street in Michigan City.
Smith is charged with aggravated battery, leaving the scene of a crash resulting in serious bodily injury, and driving while suspended with a prior conviction. He is being held in the LaPorte County Jail on a $25,000 bond.
