NIPSCO and the United Steelworkers say they’ve reached a possible deal after weeks of tension that led to workers being locked out.

That lockout started April 2 when the two sides couldn’t agree on a new contract before the old one expired at the end of March. Talks had been going on since January.

The deal isn’t official yet, as Union members still have to vote on it. If they approve it, workers can go back to their jobs and the lockout that put more than 1,600 workers off the job will end.

Before the lockout, some had already been on strike and holding pickets across northern Indiana. Now, those pickets are stopping, and planned rallies have been called off as part of the deal.
