Indiana State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened at a gas station on Portage Avenue in South Bend.

According to preliminary information, South Bend Police were contacted just after 3:10 p.m. on Wednesday, May 6, by the mother of a 25-year-old woman requesting a welfare check near Cleveland Road and Portage Avenue. Police were told the woman might be armed.

Officers with the South Bend Police Department and St. Joseph County Police located the woman at a gas station in the 3300 block of Portage Avenue.

Investigators say surveillance video shows the woman produced a handgun before at least one officer fired their weapon.

Officers provided medical aid until paramedics arrived. The woman was taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Indiana State Police say the investigation remains ongoing and will include a review of body camera footage, in-car video, and surveillance recordings. The case will be turned over to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office once the investigation is complete.
