Elkhart Common Council delays vote on pedestrian bridge repairs

The Elkhart Common Council has delayed a vote on funding repairs for the Nappanee Street Pedestrian Bridge in Elkhart.
City officials said Monday’s delay was due to a procedural issue involving publication requirements for the ordinance. The council is now expected to vote in June.
Officials say the bridge, which spans South Nappanee Street near Strong Avenue, is nearing the end of its service life and will eventually need to be demolished because of safety concerns.
The bridge is heavily used by students traveling between Mary Daly Elementary School and West Side Middle School.
The proposed $337,000 project would fund temporary repairs to ramps and steel beams while the city finalizes plans for a replacement bridge.
City officials said the new bridge will be ADA compliant and built alongside the current structure so pedestrian access can remain open during construction.
