An 18-year-old Shipshewana man was arrested after a crash involving a motorcycle left a Middlebury man with catastrophic injuries east of Middlebury.

The crash happened around 3:40 p.m. on U.S. 20 at County Road 43, about two miles east of Middlebury.

According to investigators, Logan Conklin was driving a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado westbound on U.S. 20 behind several vehicles when traffic ahead slowed for a vehicle attempting to turn left onto County Road 43.

Police say another vehicle passed the turning vehicle on the shoulder. Investigators say Conklin then attempted to pass both vehicles by driving off the roadway and into the grass.

Authorities say Conklin lost control of the pickup, spun back onto the roadway, and crossed into the eastbound lane.

Two motorcycles were approaching from the opposite direction. One rider narrowly avoided the crash, but a 2018 Harley-Davidson motorcycle operated by a 57-year-old Middlebury man collided with the pickup.

The motorcyclist suffered catastrophic injuries, including a severed foot, a broken arm, multiple lacerations, and possible internal injuries.

Investigators say Conklin showed signs of impairment from cannabis use. A Drug Recognition Evaluation was administered and allegedly indicated impairment. Police say Conklin also tested positive for cannabis during an oral fluid drug test. Blood test results are pending.

Conklin was booked into the Elkhart County Jail on a preliminary charge of Operating While Intoxicated Causing Catastrophic Bodily Injury, a Level 4 felony. He was also cited for improper passing and driving left of center.
