Police in Mishawaka are investigating a shooting that left a teenage boy seriously injured in the parking lot of Strikes and Spares on Grape Road.
According to the Mishawaka Police Department, officers were called to the business around 5:45 p.m. Thursday, May 21, after reports of gunfire and armed individuals in the parking lot.
When officers arrived, they were unable to find any victims or suspects at the scene. A short time later, police were called to Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center after a gunshot victim arrived at the hospital.
Investigators said the victim, a 15-year-old boy from the South Bend area, suffered a gunshot wound and was later transported for emergency surgery due to significant injuries. Authorities said the teen is expected to survive.
Detectives and crime scene technicians recovered shell casings and other evidence from the parking lot as part of the investigation.
Police said investigators are continuing to follow leads involving possible suspects, digital evidence, and forensic analysis. Authorities believe the shooting was an isolated incident and said there is no ongoing threat to the public.
