A 22-year-old New Carlisle man was killed in a single-vehicle crash late Saturday night in rural St. Joseph County.

According to the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 10 p.m. to the area of County Road 1000 North near County Road 850 East on reports of a crash.

Investigators determined that a black 2012 GMC Acadia was traveling eastbound on County Road 1000 North when it crossed the center line, traveled through the westbound lane, and left the north side of the roadway. The vehicle then struck two trees before coming to rest.

The driver and sole occupant of the SUV was identified as Austin M. Vanasdall, 22, of New Carlisle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two motorists who were traveling on County Road 1000 North told deputies they had been passed by the Acadia west of the crash site. Both witnesses reported the vehicle appeared to be traveling at a speed significantly above the posted limit.

The crash remains under investigation by the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office.
