Two-year-old girl shot while sleeping inside an Elkhart home

A 2-year-old girl remains in critical condition after being struck by gunfire while sleeping inside an Elkhart home early Tuesday morning.

According to the Elkhart Police Department, officers responded around 12:58 a.m. June 23 after reports of gunshots in the 1000 block of West Garfield Avenue. Investigators determined that multiple rounds struck a residence, with one of the bullets hitting the child as she slept.

The girl’s parents transported her to Elkhart General Hospital before she was transferred by medical helicopter to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. Authorities said she was listed in critical condition.

Police processed the scene and collected evidence, but no arrests had been made as of Tuesday morning.
