Mishawaka Police are investigating a fight that broke out during the City of Mishawaka and Mishawaka Parks Independence Day Celebration at Central Park on Saturday, June 27.

Police say an officer responded to reports of a fight involving several juveniles. During the incident, the officer encountered youths who appeared to have been fighting while carrying what initially looked like firearms.

Investigators later determined the suspected weapons were water guns that closely resembled real firearms. Police say the officer drew a Taser during the encounter but did not deploy it.

Because the Independence Day celebration was still underway, officers waited until after the fireworks concluded before escorting those involved from the park.

Police say a formal report will be completed after all available evidence has been collected.

The department is also asking anyone who has photos or video of the incident, including footage posted on social media, to contact the Mishawaka Police Department’s Detective Bureau.
