South Bend Mayor James Mueller is threatening to veto a city council effort to pause a controversial trail project in St. Joseph County.

The South Bend Common Council voted Monday to call for a pause on the Midwest Continental Divide Trail, which would connect 160 acres of parks, forests and hiking trails across western St. Joseph County.

Councilman Oliver Davis introduced the resolution, saying South Bend should join the county in stepping back from the project.

Mueller supports the trail and says the push to stop it is based on misleading information.

No route has been chosen, a trail commission has not been created, and construction is not expected to begin until at least 2030.
