A new trail is being proposed for South Bend’s west side, just weeks after another major trail project ran into opposition.

St. Joseph County Surveyor Derek Dieter and ecologist Steve Sass are proposing the Marshall “Major” Taylor Heritage Trail.

The route would connect historically Black neighborhoods on the city’s west side with the existing Coal Line Trail, with the possibility of eventually reaching Notre Dame and Mishawaka.

The proposal comes after the St. Joseph County Council and South Bend Common Council moved to halt the Midwest Continental Divide Trail following opposition from some residents.

Dieter says roughly 40-million dollars previously set aside for that project could potentially be redirected to the new trail proposal.
