An Elkhart Police officer is on unpaid administrative leave after prosecutors filed new charges against him.

Tyler Koeppel is charged with attempted residential entry and unlawful use of a police radio.

Court documents say Koeppel repeatedly tried to contact a woman on June 29 despite protection orders. Investigators say he later went to her apartment while in uniform and tried to get inside with a key, but was stopped by a chain lock.

WSBT reports police say Koeppel then heard a call about the incident over his radio and allegedly told responding officers to slow down and disregard the call.

Koeppel told investigators he was concerned about the woman’s safety.

The Elkhart Board of Public Safety placed Koeppel on unpaid leave Tuesday.
