Former Notre Dame football star Jaylon Smith is the interim head football coach at Fort Wayne North Side High School.

According to our sister station WPTA, Smith is filling in for former head coach Ben Johnson. Smith has been an assistant coach at North Side since 2024.

The Fort Wayne native played linebacker at Notre Dame from 2013 to 2015 and won the Butkus Award as the nation’s top linebacker in 2015.

The Dallas Cowboys selected him in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft. He played nearly a decade in the NFL and made the Pro Bowl in 2019.

Smith played high school football at Bishop Luers. North Side opened the season with a 19-to-nothing loss to East Noble Friday night.

The Legends travel to New Haven this Friday.
