Nine officers fired weapons in fatal Gary Police shooting

Indiana State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that left an armed security officer dead in Gary.

Gary Police and Lake County Sheriff’s officers were called to the area of Broadway and 4th Avenue near the metro station around 10:55 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 28, after receiving a report of an armed security officer behaving erratically.

Police said officers attempted to de-escalate the situation before a confrontation occurred around 11:20 p.m. Gunfire was exchanged, and the security officer was pronounced dead at the scene.

Indiana State Police investigators determined six Gary Police officers and three Lake County Sheriff’s officers fired their weapons during the confrontation.

The nine officers have been placed on administrative leave in accordance with their agencies’ policies.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office has identified the person who died, but Indiana State Police did not release the identity in its initial statement.

State police are also not identifying the officers involved, leaving the release of their names to the Gary Police Department and Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
