Notre Dame turned a close game into a runaway victory Sunday night, using a dominant second half to defeat Wisconsin 41-13 at Lambeau Field.

The fourth-ranked Fighting Irish led 13-10 at halftime before taking control after the break. Notre Dame scored on its first three possessions of the second half and added a defensive touchdown to pull away.

Quarterback C.J. Carr threw two touchdown passes, while running back Aneyas Williams rushed for 90 yards and scored twice as Notre Dame opened the season 1-0.

Wisconsin struck first with a 27-yard field goal from Gavin Lahm, but Notre Dame responded with a 52-yard field goal from Spencer Porath and a 3-yard touchdown pass from Carr to James Flanigan.

The Badgers tied the game early in the second quarter when Colton Joseph found Malachi Coleman for a 28-yard touchdown. Porath later added a 26-yard field goal, giving Notre Dame a 13-10 lead at halftime.

The game changed quickly in the third quarter.

Williams finished a 70-yard Notre Dame drive with a 3-yard touchdown run to extend the Irish lead to 20-10. Less than two minutes later, defensive back D.J. McKinney intercepted Joseph and returned the pick 55 yards for another touchdown.

Wisconsin managed one more score, a 36-yard field goal by Lahm, but the Badgers could not generate another sustained scoring drive.

Notre Dame added two touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Williams scored from five yards out, and Carr later connected with Nolan James Jr. on a 28-yard touchdown pass.

Carr finished the night with two touchdown passes, while the Irish defense limited Wisconsin to just 13 points after halftime. Notre Dame also overcame a sluggish opening half in which the Badgers held a slight advantage in total offense.

The victory marked Notre Dame’s first game of the season and came in the latest installment of the school’s Shamrock Series, which brought the Irish to the home of the Green Bay Packers.

Notre Dame will return to action on Saturday afternoon, at home, against Rice.
