UPDATE: South Bend Police are investigating a Saturday night shooting near Eddy Street Commons that left a woman and a police officer wounded.

Police say Notre Dame officers notified South Bend Police around 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, about a man reportedly seen with a gun and pointing it at people. Officers located someone matching the description at the south end of Eddy Street Commons, but police said he was not armed during that encounter.

About 20 South Bend officers were in the area responding to that call when a single gunshot was heard near Eddy Street and Angela Boulevard.

Officers found a woman with a gunshot wound to the leg. Her injuries were not considered life-threatening, and she was taken to a hospital for treatment.

A South Bend police officer also suffered a non-life-threatening injury. Preliminary evidence indicates the officer may have been hurt by a ricochet.

South Bend Police, Notre Dame Police and St. Joseph County Police secured the area around Eddy Street Commons and the Notre Dame campus after the shooting.

ORIGINAL STORY:  Police are searching for a suspected gunman after shots were reported in the Eddy Street Commons area near the University of Notre Dame.

According to an ND Alert issued on Saturday, Sep. 19, during the Notre Dame/Michigan State game, the suspect was last seen along the south edge of campus. Police are actively searching the area.

People inside Notre Dame Stadium have been instructed to remain inside the stadium. Others in the area are being told to shelter in place.

The suspect is described as a heavy-set Black male wearing blue shorts, a black shirt and one white shoe.

Anyone in the affected area should follow police instructions and avoid the area until authorities determine it is safe.
