Invasive crayfish found in Cass County

Michigan DNR
State officials are asking Cass County residents to watch for an invasive crayfish found in the county for the first time.
The Michigan Invasive Species Program says two dead red swamp crayfish were found in a private pond near Niles during a mid-September plant survey.
The species has been prohibited in Michigan since 2014. Officials say it reproduces quickly, can crowd out native species, damage aquatic plants and burrow into shorelines.
Red swamp crayfish are generally brown or red and measure two to six inches long. They have raised bumps on their bodies and claws, along with distinctive markings on their backs and tails.
Anyone spotting one in Berrien or Cass counties is asked to photograph it or, if possible, collect it, bag it and freeze it. Sightings can be reported to the Michigan DNR Fisheries Division.
