A Michigan man is facing felony charges after police say he was found with a child at a hotel in Kalamazoo.
Twenty-seven-year-old Austin Tylor Birtel of Port Huron is charged with child solicitation, a Level Four felony, and kidnapping, a Level Five felony. He was booked into the Kosciusko County Jail with bond set at 70-thousand-500 dollars.
According to court documents, authorities began investigating in September after a child was reported missing from a Kosciusko County residence.
Investigators discovered messages between the child and Birtel, including information about bus tickets from South Bend to Cleveland. Police later traced Birtel’s cell phone to a hotel in Kalamazoo.
Officers from Kalamazoo police and Michigan State Police assisted Kosciusko County investigators in locating Birtel and the child inside the hotel.
Court documents indicate the child told investigators they had left home with Birtel and planned to travel around the country.
The charges are allegations, and the case remains subject to court proceedings.
