Plans to transform a vacant downtown Elkhart building into a public safety headquarters are moving forward.
The City Council approved nearly two million dollars on Monday, Oct. 19, for interior demolition work at the former Chase building.
The facility would eventually house police, fire administration, 911 dispatch and other city departments.
Mayor Rod Roberson says renovating the building will save taxpayers more than 20 million dollars compared to new construction.
Work is scheduled to begin in November and continue through March.

I’d rather go back to the former traffic patters along 2nd and 3rd streets. I now avid going anywhere in Elkhart because of the stupid traffic patterns instituted by the current administration.
Maybe move the Post Office to a more convenient location. I know the location is not under the purview of the mayor but he can start the ball rolling.
