South Bend has updated its animal welfare ordinance to clarify regulations and improve pet safety.

The changes include new licensing rules that tie a pet’s city license expiration to its rabies vaccination.

Fees vary based on sterilization and vaccination status, while some seniors and microchipped pets qualify for free licensing.

The city says the changes aim to encourage vaccinations, microchipping and spaying or neutering.
