Notre Dame and Purdue will not play each other in the 2027 college football season.
Purdue announced on Tuesday that they have decided to pause their football rivalry series with Notre Dame. They are replacing the Irish on next season’s schedule with West Virginia.
Purdue last faced West Virginia on Sept. 21, 1996, dropping that game 20-6. The Boilermakers won the first matchup against the Mountaineers 26-24 on Sept. 2, 1995.
“With the expected expansion of the College Football Playoff to 24 teams, there will be scheduling parameters for schools to follow, including having 10 regular season games against power conference opponents,” said Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at Purdue Tommy McClelland. “Getting Coach Odom’s program into matchups that best serve our goals and ambitions has been a focus of mine since arriving in West Lafayette, and we are excited to add this game with West Virginia.
McClelland added that the series with Notre Dame is not completely coming to an end.
“The tradition-rich rivalry of Purdue and Notre Dame, a matchup that has been played on and off 90 times in program history, will be reevaluated for potential addition to future schedules,” McClelland said.
The other non-conference games set for Purdue in the 2027 season are UAlbany on Aug. 28 and Miami (Ohio) on Sept. 11.
Soon after the announcement from Purdue, Notre Dame said they have added a home-and-home series with a different Big Ten school, Illinois. The Irish and the Illini haven’t played each other since 1968.
Illinois visits Notre Dame on Sept. 4, 2027, while the Irish will travel to Champaign on Sept. 2, 2028. Notre Dame is 11-0-1 all-time against Illinois.
