LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Law enforcement agencies in Michigan are stepping up road patrols as part of an effort to curb traffic crashes during the July 4th weekend.

Michigan State Police are participating in the national Operation Combined Accident Reduction Effort as well as the summertime Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over drunken driving crackdown.

Dangerous drivers and motorists who don’t use seatbelts are among those being targeted by patrols.

Police say the holiday period begins Friday evening and runs through Monday’s holiday. Last year, state police say there were 12 traffic deaths around the Fourth of July in Michigan.
